Does Ritalin cause brain damage?

By Patrick J. McGrath, OC, PhD, FRSC

Dr. Pat

Question:

My ten-year-old is on Ritalin™. Will it damage his brain?

Dr. Par responds:

If your son is on Ritalin for a good reason, the best evidence is that it will not harm his brain. Ritalin or methylphenidate is a stimulant that helps with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

It has been used for decades and has a good safety record. The major negative side effects are less appetite, sleep problems, and abdominal pain. Talk to your son’s doctor about your concerns.

Patrick J. McGrath OC, PhD, FRSC is a clinical psychologist and a researcher. He is Professor of Psychology, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry at Dalhousie University and Vice President - Research at IWK Health Centre in Halifax.
